Understanding American Football: Tackle Vs. Flag
Understanding American Football: Tackle Vs. Flag

American football comes in two main formats: tackle football and flag football. Both versions share the same basic rules but differ in physicality and player contact.

Tackle Football

Tackle football is the traditional, full-contact version of the sport where players wear helmets and pads. The goal is to advance the ball to score touchdowns while defenders attempt to tackle (bring down) the ball carrier. This version is highly strategic and physically demanding, making it a great test of strength, skill, and teamwork.

Flag Football

Flag football is a non-contact version where instead of tackling, defenders pull a flag attached to the ball carrier’s waist to stop play. This makes it safer and more accessible, especially for younger players and newcomers. Flag football focuses more on speed, agility, and passing skills, making it a fast-paced and exciting game for all ages.

American Football in Kenya

Under the Kenya Federation of American Football (KFAF), both versions are now available in Kenya:
Flag Football: Played from Under 12 to Under 18, providing a foundation for young athletes.
Tackle Football: Available for senior players, offering opportunities for competitive and professional growth.

KFAF is committed to growing the sport in Kenya, ensuring players of all ages can enjoy and compete in both flag and tackle football.
