Kusa Executives Urges Universities To Adopt American Football

Kenya Federation of American football president was invited by Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) executive during their scheduled meeting to conduct a presentation about American football in Kenya where particularly flag football was of emphasis that accommodates both genders.

The presentation purposed on how the game is played, the conspicuous difference between flag and tackle, size of the field, the technical staff, equipment involved, competition structure and how the transition to tackle given that it's a new concept taking root in Kenya.

Kenya University sports Association endorsed the full adoption of American football into the university’s sports curriculum. They urged KFAF leadership to continue with the awareness campaign of American football in Kenya and most importantly educate/train coaches and referees who will oversee the development of the game in universities.

The Ministry of sports is championing sports diversity in Kenya and this is a welcoming move to have a new sport introduced in Kenyan learning institutions.

In conclusion, once American football hits the five conferences it will be no longer be a demonstration sport but a competitive sport and KUSA games will feature American football.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Flag Football: Kenya’S Path To The Global Stage

Flag football is rapidly growing worldwide as an exciting, fast-paced, and accessible alternative to tackle football. With its emphasis on skill, strategy, and agility rather than physical contact, the sport is attracting players of all ages, from youth to elite competitors.

What is Flag Football?

Flag football follows the same basic rules as tackle football but eliminates tackling. Instead of bringing an opponent to the ground, defenders stop the play by pulling a flag attached to the ball carrier’s waist. This makes the game safer while still retaining the competitive spirit and strategic depth of American football.

Why is Flag Football Growing?

  1. Inclusive and Accessible – With no need for helmets or heavy pads, flag football is easier and more affordable to play, making it accessible to schools, communities, and beginners.
  2. Safer Alternative – By removing full-contact tackles, flag football significantly reduces the risk of injuries, making it ideal for young athletes and recreational players.
  3. Skill Development – Players focus on speed, agility, passing, and teamwork, which are key elements of the game at every level.
  4. Global Recognition – Flag football will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, creating a pathway for international competition.

Kenya’s Road to Continental and Olympic Success

The Kenya Federation of American Football (KFAF) is leading the country’s charge in flag football, ensuring opportunities for players of all ages:
U12 and U17 youth categories
Senior men’s and women’s divisions

Kenya aims to send teams to continental competitions in June 2025 and again in 2027, across all categories. The ultimate goal is to develop a competitive national program that will qualify for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, where flag football will debut as an official sport.

KFAF Launches Historic High School Flag Football Pilot Program in Kenya

Chavakali High School, Vihiga County — Kenya Federation of American Football (KFAF), in partnership with NFL International and Touchdown Sports, successfully hosted Kenya’s first-ever high school flag football pilot program. Held at Chavakali High School, this groundbreaking two-day event marked a significant milestone in the introduction of American football to Kenyan youth.

The initiative, which is part of KFAF’s long-term vision to integrate flag football into school sports across the country, attracted 10 enthusiastic schools from the Western Kenya region, with plans to reach 20 schools in total by the end of the pilot phase in June.

Empowering Coaches and Teachers — Day 1

The first day focused on capacity-building for high school games teachers. These sessions, led by internationally certified coaches Coach Waweru and Coach Bahati, featured intensive training on the fundamentals of flag football. The educators received technical skills, drills, and rule explanations necessary to begin implementing the sport in their respective schools.

NFL International generously sponsored equipment and educational materials, while Touchdown Sports financed the logistics, including travel, meals, and accommodation for participating coaches. The event’s high standards reflect a growing global interest in nurturing American football talent from the grassroots level.

Student Engagement and Friendly Scrimmages — Day 2

The second day was all about student participation. Fun, engaging scrimmages and learning activities introduced students to the basics of flag football in an exciting, inclusive environment. It was an opportunity for boys and girls to play side by side, reflecting the sport’s inclusive nature and Olympic aspirations.

Official Launch and Local Leadership Support

The program was officially launched by Chavakali High School’s Chief Principal, Mr. Wachilonga, who praised KFAF’s decision to use the school as the launchpad for high school-level American football in Kenya.

“I am thrilled to see Chavakali alumni, Mr. Alwanga, at the helm of this great initiative,” said Mr. Wachilonga. “I encourage our students to emulate such leadership and excellence. This is not just a sport—it’s a gateway to global opportunities.”

Voices of Support from Educators

Fred Okere, Games Teacher at Vihiga High School, described the experience as transformative:
"This is a sport of golden moments. It promotes diversity and inclusion in our schools. I am inspired to pursue officiating in flag football and champion it beyond our school.”

Mr. Okere was not alone in his enthusiasm. The Principal of Kimobo Mixed Secondary School shared his excitement as well:
"Flag football is an inclusive sport. As a mixed school, we are eager to field both boys' and girls' teams and lead our region to the national and international stage."

Coach Bahati will lead the coaches’ education program, while Coach Waweru takes charge of developing officiating standards across high school programs.
