Alpha Squad claimed the men’s title. Hurricanes women AFC dominated the women’s division. M-Pesa Foundation Academy delivered. A pre-season tournament organised like no other — and a statement of intent for the season ahead.

M-Pesa Foundation Academy delivered everything it promised. Artificial turf that athletes loved playing on. Fans seated close to the sideline with a spectacular view of every play. A DJ keeping the energy locked in from the first whistle to the last. The KFAF executive on the ground from the very start, making sure every element of the event ran smoothly from 11  AM all the way through to 10 PM.

Flag football under floodlights in Kenya has never looked like this before. And from the moment the first game kicked off, it was clear this tournament was going to be talked about for a long time. The pictures and videos have done justice  Follow Kfafofficial254 IG page for the full gallery.

THE DOMINANT FORCES 

Alpha Squad Take the Men’s Title. Hurricanes AFC Own the Women’s Division.

Two teams walked away from M-Pesa Foundation Academy as champions. Alpha Squad Men. The new kids on the block, already turning heads in pre-season, delivered total dominance in the men’s category going unbeaten. On the women’s side, Hurricanes Women AFC were a class apart throughout the tournament, defending the quality they have built over multiple seasons to claim the pre-season opener title.

Two champions. Two very different stories. And together they have set the standard for what the 2026–2027 KFAF Flag Football league season is going to look like.

THE  FLAG FOOTBALL IN KENYA DIRECTION 

Every matchup was a do-or-die situation with incredible intensity. Experience and individual talent pushed the game limits, while the level of competition, game IQ, and trick plays reached new heights. Teams have truly leveled up after the IFAF World Championship in Düsseldorf. Plus, the record number of participating teams is a massive improvement, and with universities joining in following our successful hosting of the NFL Africa Continental Championship, the future looks bright!

“We played as a team collectively. Everyone put their all into this. No one stepped onto the field with anything less than 100%. That was the mentality from the very first game. It was not a single effort from one person. Everyone understood their assignment and we executed collectively. That is how we made it to the final and succeeded.”

Alpha came into the Floodlights Tournament with an energy that was impossible to miss, and Coach Will is making it clear that this is only the beginning.

With the KFAF League played in a circuit format, there is still plenty of football left to play. But Alpha is already setting its sights on the bigger prize.

Coach Will has promised to double down on the effort, keep pushing the squad, and make a serious run at the league title.

The message to the rest of the league? Alpha is flaming hot. Here’s what Coach Will had to say

“We just won the Floodlights Tournament in our first year. The other teams we faced were amazing some with veteran players. But we had that hunger, the desire and drive and in the end we wanted it more. This win is now behind us and our focus shifts to the coming season, practice will be intense because these teams now know what we are about. So we have got to step up ours further. This is ALPHA SQUAD, We have  hit the mark and we are here to stay.”

THE RUNNERS-UP RESPOND

First Runners up Women-City Stags Women — Terry Akinyi, Captain.

“We lost to Hurricanes in the final but overall I think we did well — we haven’t been together as a unit for long. Hurricanes Women is a very good team; most of them were part of the National Team Squad, so commendable of them winning this tournament. It is a moment for us to learn, regroup, re-strategise, and go for the national title. Next time I will be doing an interview with both a medal and a trophy in hand. Let’s go Stags.”

First Runners UP Men-UON Mighty Nyati — Griffin Kisanya, Captain.

The defending champions from the 2025 inaugural Floodlight Tournament came in as the side everyone was watching. The men’s final was an intense, closely contested affair — a scoreless first half, with the only decisive score coming from a safety in the second half against Nyati. Two of their best players had been lost in the semi-finals to concussion protocol and injury, which shifted momentum at a critical moment.

“It is a disappointing loss. Momentum shifted when we lost two of our best players in the semis. We put up a good show and played better and more strategic in the final — it is unfortunate we couldn’t hold on. We are going to take it day by day. As the league starts, we will tackle it game by game. We are playing much better than last year and we are going to come back with more fire, more energy. We think we should have won the Floodlight Tournament and we intend to prove ourselves right.”

THE COMMITTEE THAT MADE IT HAPPEN

Special Recognition — The Sub-Committee.

Events do not organise themselves. The seamless execution of the KFAF Floodlight Tournament — from venue coordination to event management to the overall experience on the day — is the direct result of a sub-committee that worked tirelessly to get every detail right. They deserve to be named.

The KFAF executive also showed up in full force on the day. That top-level presence matters — it signals to every team, every fan, and every partner that this federation takes its own events seriously. Combined with the sub-committee’s preparation, the result was a tournament that felt professional from start to finish.

KFAF President George Alwanga with the Wilson Revo Flag Football, the official game ball unveiled for the tournament. 

Donated by Wilson in collaboration with IFAF, the Revo is designed specifically for Flag Football. Kenyan athletes now have the opportunity to put it through its paces on the field, share feedback with Wilson and IFAF, and contribute to the refinement of the ball that will feature on the road to the LA 2028 Olympic Games. 

MATCH OFFICIALS

We’ve officially leveled up the game intensity! With new officials joining us from our recent clinic, we successfully ran four games simultaneously without a hitch.

 Head of Referees Donald Juma shared, "It's impressive what the new officials have accomplished since graduation. This is the injection our system needs, and we look forward to their continued development.

ONE THING TO FIX 

Teams from the Central , Coast, and Western Kenya regions were unable to make it to the pre-season opener due to logistical challenges. KFAF’s executive has acknowledged this directly and committed to exploring options that make future tournaments more accessible and affordable for teams outside Nairobi. The goal of the Floodlight Tournament has always been to assess the readiness of teams across the entire country ahead of the season and that goal requires the whole country to be able to show up. KFAF Executive is exploring solutions on it.
